报告题目:Secondary-data Research in OSCM: The PSM-DID approach and its application in offsite construction
报告内容简介:‘Propensity score matching (PSM) and difference-in-differences (DID)’ approach effectively uses secondary data to provide robust results in diverse operations and supply chain management research. We applied it to the context of ‘off-site construction.’ It is an innovative manufacturing process, where building construction is shifted from the job site to a controlled factory environment and a mass production process. Methodologically, PSM focuses on statistically identifying a portfolio of firms with operations attributes (or covariates) similar to the sample firms (i.e., off-site construction companies) but has yet to be strongly exposed to the practice at a given time. These firms will be used as the benchmark, or namely, ‘control’ to test the difference in performance outcomes in contrast to the sample firms, namely ‘treatments.’ DiD approach is then used to estimate ‘the average treatment effect,’ which is the ‘difference’ in sample firms’ operations outcomes before/after off-site construction practices and the ‘difference’ from the control firms. Using the PSM-DID approach and objective data, we surprisingly found highly engaged off-site construction firms experience poorer operations performance than their peers. However, they overperform if their supply chain stability is high. The empirical evidence providing interesting implications to policy-making and practical adoption of off-site construction, especially in the public sector.
