摘 要： This paper investigates the value of product and component flexibility in inventory and production management of hybrid manufacturing/remanufacturing systems. The system serves the demand for new and remanufactured products and allows for substitution between these types of products. The objective of the system is to minimize ‘strategic’ cost, i.e., the weighted sum of economic cost and environmental impact. Our research contributes to the remanufacturing literature by considering the flexibility from two-way substitution and by suggesting a decision policy for firms to dynamically manage the inventory of components. Through Markov decision processes modeling, we analyze single-component products and show that the optimal policy is of threshold-type under certain conditions. Then, we analyze multi-component products, for which flexibility can be achieved by manipulating the portion of remanufactured components in a product. To address problems of high dimensions, we develop a close-to-optimal heuristic. Our results indicate that substitution can significantly reduce strategic costs, by several million euros per year in our numerical experiments. But substitution appears to be a phenomenon for profit-oriented firms. We find that sustainability-oriented firms require significantly less frequent product and component substitution.

Carey商学院供应链管理系做博士后研究。主要研究方向为闭环供应链（Closed-Loop Supply Chain）、可持续性运作管理（Sustainable Operations Management）。主要以数学建模为研究方法，包括动态规划（Dynamic Programming）、博弈论（Game Theory）等。现担任《Production and Operations Management》、《European Journal of Operational Research》、《Annals of Operations Research》等SCI/SSCI期刊的审稿人。
